26 December 05 - 21:01Brand new hands!

I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend.  We will reopen Tuesday, and will be open our regular hours all of this week, including Saturday.  Come see us and get yourself some presents!

So I was knitting with Silk Garden today (a ribbed hat), and was not enjoying it at all.  Not enjoying Silk Garden?!?!  What's up with that?!  Well, my hands were so rough and dry and chapped from winter weather that the silk kept catching on every piece of dry skin and rough cuticles (read: the entire surface of my hands).  What to do?  No amount of lotion seemed to help.  So I figured some exfoliation AND some moisturizing were in order.  After some tinkering around in the kitchen, I can now share my "Brand New Hands" salt scrub fix-up:

In a small container, measure out about 2 tablespoons of sea salt.  Add the vegetable oil of your choice until the salt is completely soaked and just covered with oil (think a little juicier than sand-castle damp sand consistency); I used extra virgin olive oil since it's what I had in the kitchen, but almond, apricot seed, or jojoba would work well, too.  Add about 5 drops of essential oil like lavender or lemon if desired.  Mix well; you can use your fingers since it's going to go on them anyway!

Take a scoop of the salt scrub and rub gently over your hands in a circular motion, paying extra attention to cuticles.  Don't rub too hard, let the grainy salt do the work.  If you have broken skin, yes, the salt will sting!  Be careful of chapped spots or paper cuts.  Rinse off with warm, not hot, water, then pat dry.  Taa-daa!!!  Brand new hands, fit for knitting silk or any other snaggy fibers.

I just mixed up a baby-food jar of this stuff to keep by my kitchen sink.  Go make some, right now!

21 December 05 - 09:00Stitch & Bitch 12/22

Join us at this week's Stitch & Bitch, Thursday, December 22nd, from 6 to 8:30 pm.  Bring your current project and join us for knitting, snacks, and wine.  This is a great time to get in some last-minute gift knitting away from prying eyes!

Stitch & Bitch is a social night, so if you need to bring in a specific project for help, call us to schedule a separate time for assistance.  If you run into a little snag on your project while you're at S&B, you'll be surrounded by many friendly knitters glad to offer their advice.

Don't forget!!!  We will be closed this Saturday, Dec. 24th, for the holiday weekend.  We will be open our normal hours all next week.

14 December 05 - 09:32Next Stitch & Bitch

There was a bit of confusion over the date of the next Stitch & Bitch, we accidentally published two conflicting dates.

The next Stich & Bitch is on Thursday, Dec. 22nd, the Thursday before Christmas.  It's a great time to finish up last-minute Christmas gifts away from curious recipients!
