30 December 06 - 09:37Last Sale Day!
Today's the last day for our end-of-year sale! Come in and stock up on amazing yarns at bargain prices!
Oh, and for any of you who didn't get all your knitted gifts quite finished by the holidays, don't feel bad. I'll be working on the last piece of my husband's Xmas sweater today! It's the River Forest Gansey from Handknit Holidays.

Image borrowed from SavannahChik's blog, since I don't have my book handy. I'm knitting Chris' gansey in Lamb's Pride Superwash, but Cascade 220 (called for by pattern) or Nature Wool would be great, too.

(pic swiped from the Harlot)
Our sale is still going! Some sale items include yarns from Rowan, Noro, Debbie Bliss, and Karabella. Stock up on great yarns at great prices!

24 December 06 - 17:56And Heifer in a Pear Tree...
So if you're still looking for holiday gift ideas, I'd like to suggest making a donation to Heifer International in the recipient's name. This is a great charity which helps people around the world end hunger by donating animals such as cows, goats, chickens, and bees to families and communities in need. Donate today and have an e-card sent, or print a card to give in person.

From all of us at Knit Nouveau, we hope you have a wonderful holiday and enjoy the spirit of the season.

23 December 06 - 10:09Vertical Stripe Scarf
I don't have a picture for today's project, but it's a quick project at 2 stitches to the inch, and you can use up scraps of this and that. Use multiple strands of yarns to get a bulky weight.
Vertical Stripe Scarf:
Using a 24" or longer size 15 circular, cast on 120 stitches, leaving a 6" tail. Knit one row, cut yarn, leaving a 6" tail. **Attach new yarn, leaving 6" tail, knit one row, cut yarn, leaving 6" tail.** Repeat between ** until scarf is desired width, bind off all stitches loosely. Tie tails into groups for fringe.
We'll be closing today at 4pm, our usual time, and reopening Tuesday, Dec. 26th at 10am.

22 December 06 - 23:26Domiknitrix
Today's project is from the new book, Domiknitrix (I'll post more about how impressed I am by this book on another post later). Flower Pins from Noro Kureyon:

These are small and quick, so there's still time to make a bouquet over the weekend. Sorry about the fuzzy photo.
To make up for that bad photo, I bring you a lovely shot of a basket of new Handmaiden Sea Silk and Silk Spun yarns. Sea Silk contains a fiber called sea cell, derived from seaweed! And of course, it's lovely and soft and richly dyed. Drool.

21 December 06 - 17:09Knitting Wonderland
Ok, so we’ve covered what we’re making for others, but what about gifts for my knitting peeps (people, that is)? Where’s the love?
Today I bring you the 12 days of knitters’ gifts:
1 Namaste knitting bag in a pear tree

2 Lantern Moon silk needle case

3 square knitting needles

4 skeins of cashmere 5
5 golden sheep needle gauges

6 of Julie’s beaded stitch markers
7 skeins of sea silk

8 cashmere hat kits
9 glossy knitting books
10 skeins of Silk Rhapsody
11 Vietnamese Rice Baskets
12 Knit Nouveau gift certificates
And today’s project is a luscious bulky cashmere hat, available as a kit in Handmaiden 12-ply cashmere:

You can also knit this as a headband/neckwarmer! It’s super quick to knit on size 13 needles.

21 December 06 - 00:27Cheating? Nahhh...
OK, so I stole today's project idea from Martha Stewart. You can use needle felting to embellish store-bought (blasphemy!) hats, mittens, or scarves. We have needle felting tools in stock, and a new batch of handpainted wool in a rainbow of colors just arrived. Make flowers, swirls, polka dots, even monogram initials! Go wild! You can have the joy of creating a personalized gift and have it done by Christmas.
-
19 December 06 - 23:20Knit Simple
We're down to the wire, so the solution is? Fat yarn. Big needles.

A simple cabled bag in super-bulky yarn from the current issue of Knit Simple magazine. We like Burly Spun or Rio de la Plata's Grueso. We have bag handles in stock, just for you!
Join us for this week's Stitch & Bitch, Thursday night from 6 to 8:30pm. Get in some last-minute knitting away from prying eyes; bring a holiday treat to share, if you like!

18 December 06 - 23:01Because Tracey Ullman says so...
Today's project (last week before C-day! Ack!) is the "First Hat" from Tracy Ullman and Mel Clark's book, Knit 2 Together:

Make it as a beanie or a cloche! So cute! I recommend Rio de la Plata, Nature Wool Chunky, or Berroco's Keltic tweed to match gauge.
I also love Ms. Ullman's comment on knitting with double pointed needles: "It's a bit fiddly holding them all at first, but it makes you look ever so clever". True, so true.

17 December 06 - 10:19I.O.U.
... an extra pattern, since I stayed out doing late-night holiday shopping last night. My loss (OK, so not really), your gain!
Since we're in the final week before Christmas, and in the middle of Hannukah, I'm trying to find fast projects that could still be finished in time for last-minute gifts. We find project salvation in Knitty, of course.
First, Fuzzy Feet:

A quick knit in Lamb's Pride Worsted, these are just oversized socks that you felt to size. Use some scraps and mix and match for striped Fuzzies.
Next, Voodoo Wristers:

Just basic knitted tubes with buttonholes for the thumbs. Knit them in a luscious alpaca, like hand-dyed Atacama or in Debbie Bliss Alpaca Silk DK.
And last for today, Fetching wristers:

For those comfortable with cables, these are a quick gift. Knit them in a soft worsted wool; we love Aurora 8 or Artyarns Supermerino.

15 December 06 - 19:00Don't you want a, want a Panta?
So Calorimetry has been so popular, I thought I'd make today's post a near-relative, the Panta.

Make it in your favorite sport/DK weight yarn! I made one in Kathmandu DK, some folks have made them in Blue Sky Alpaca. The knit along has ended but visit the knitalong page, and download the pattern link on the right-hand side of the page. You could even add a couple of buttonholes to make it button at the back like the Calorimetry!

14 December 06 - 23:47A Quickie
OK, real life is interfering with web-life, so I just have time for a late-night quickie entry (naughty? nice? Hmm.).

Reggie to the rescue again with these AMAZING adorable felted slippers, adapted from a pattern in the book Knit One, Felt Too. The originals on the book are striped (also cute as a bug), but for these, Reggie knit them in one color of Nature Wool, with a picked up picot cuff and felted flowers made from swatches, embellished with beads. AMAZING!
-
13 December 06 - 22:23Life is too short for Ugly Slippers
So why not make some of these?

Reggie knit these adorable felted Maryjane slippers from the pattern in Funky Knits.

Knit in Burly Spun, or you could use a double-strand of bulky yarn like Lamb's Pride Bulky or Rio de la Plata. Decorate them with felted flowers, needle felting, embroidery, buttons, or beads!
We'll be hosting the Funky Knits trunk show this January, keep an eye on this website for more information!
The new class schedule is up! Click the newsletter or class link to view upcoming classes.

12 December 06 - 09:38My So Called Project...
The So Called Scarf:

And Kay's version from this week's Mason Dixon Knitting entry:

A great textured scarf, knit it in Debbie Bliss Soho, Rio de la Plata, Silk Garden, or your favorite variegated yarn. Find the pattern here.
-
11 December 06 - 14:29One skein Round Up
Today's projects are from Leigh Radford's book, One Skein.
First up, garter stitch mitts:

These are knit side to side in fingering weight yarn, try them in Artyarns Ultramerino 4 or Cherry Tree Hill Supersock.
And next, the cabled scarf, knit from one skein of Blue Sky Cotton:

You can knit with two skeins for more length, or one, if you're pressed for time!
Get inspired by other knitters' projects from the One Skein book at the knit-along website.

09 December 06 - 08:53Oh No!
I let holiday shopping into the wee hours keep me from my appointed posting rounds! Oh, the shame. To make it up to y'all, I'm posting three projects today; one for yesterday, one for today, and one to spare.
First up is the Orca Tails Scarf (thanks for the project suggestion, Lacy!): Find pattern here.

Knit in Noro Kureyon or Silk Garden, this would be gorgeous. Or try something different with a non-wool fiber like Wick soy silk blend, or Schaeffer's Handpaint Cotton. Julie's doing a pattern like this with one skein of Artyarn's Cashmere 5, including a large yarnover buttonhole to create a keyhole scarf.
Next is Calorimitry (are Knitty names getting more out-there, or is it just me?) from the new issue of Knitty.

You need to make one of these for everyone you know with long hair and cold ears. Right now. I want a half dozen for myself (but when will I knit them?). It just takes a hundred yards or so of worsted weight yarn so Artyarns Supermerino, Noro, or Wick would be great. I love the button closure at the back, so you don't have to slide it over your hair to get it on and off!
And for someone in your life who's really cold (snowboarders, bikers, outdoorsy men and womenfolk, etc.), Antifreeze, a fabulous knitted balaclava:

Check out the eye makeup peeping out from that mask! Knit this in Aurora 8, a supersoft merino that's great for next-to-the-skin wear. It even has optional ponytail holes!
-
07 December 06 - 23:59Would you, could you...
Knit Some Socks?
We love the sock patterns from Knitting Pure and Simple, like these beginner worsted weight socks:

Try them in Artyarns Supermerino, or in K1C2's Wick soysilk blend! A quick sock to knit on size 6 needles.
-
06 December 06 - 18:04Mmm...cashmere
Our Artyarns 5-ply cashmere is back in stock! So, to celebrate, today's project is Iris' one-skein cashmere wristers:

This pattern is free with purchase of Artyarns Cashmere.
This is the softest yarn I've ever felt, hands down. Come in a and feel the love!
Join us for Stitch & Bitch, this Thursday, December 7th, from 6 to 8:30pm!

05 December 06 - 19:56Felted Totes and Knitting Robots

Stripes! Today's holiday project, the Felted Striped Tote from Leigh Radford's book, One Skein. This version was knit by DeAnn in Lamb's Pride Worsted. Quick, simple, and cute! Change up the colors to fit your recipient's faves.

Attack of the knitting robots, by way of Wee Wonderfuls. Don't we all need one of these?
-
04 December 06 - 22:18Fake-Isle
Or should that be faux-isle? Today's project:

The Fake-Isle Hat from the November MagKnits. Knit in Noro Kureyon and Lamb's Pride worsted. A fun intro to fair isle, or a quick colorwork project for old pros.
-
03 December 06 - 23:19Ruffles Like Crazy!

Today's project is the lovely ruffle scarf from the book Scarf Style. This is Clare's version, knit in chunky Noro (we love Iro), and photographed in my living room (oh, those glamourous Knit Nouveau photo shoots). Try it in Iro, or in Rio de la Plata handspun!
-
02 December 06 - 09:28Hip to be Square
Kollage Yarns' Square Knitting Needles have arrived! Come road test a pair and see how great they feel in your hands! They make great gifts for knitters, too.

And to continue our theme, today's project is modified from one of my favorite books by two of my favorite gals, Mason Dixon Knitting. Gather up some fun color combo of yarns and make a pillow top of mitered squares!

You could make a fabric back or a plain knit back (or stripes, if you're fancy), and cover a store bought pillow form. I recommend Cotton Fleece or Blue Sky Cotton, but any basic-texured yarn will work. If you're feeling ambitious (and speedy), you could even pull off a small throw by Christmas, or sew squares together to create a large cozy muffler. Go crazy!

01 December 06 - 08:1424 days of Christmas Projects
We know it's tough to pick out last-minute holiday gifts, so every day between now and Christmas, we'll be posting a project idea on our website.
We're kicking it off with our Design-Your-Own Christmas Stocking:

Pick the bulky yarn or your choice (we used Noro Iro) and mix and match scrap and accent yarns to create your own stocking design. Learn to knit an "afterthought" heel, too! Pattern is available for purchase, and takes 150-200 yards of assorted bulky yarn, plus scraps for trim.
Check back tomorrow!
